Chapter 10 He didn't have any friends.
Jiang Youzhen's return to the country allowed Jiang Jingshu to completely relax. She kept a cup of coffee for herself and gave the rest of the desserts and coffee to her employees. When she saw that Jiang Youzhen had come with a luggage bag, she casually asked him about it.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming back to China? You came back alone?"
"Yeah, Dad went to another audition. He just finished filming a movie. He changed agents this year, and the new agent is quite powerful and has a lot of resources."
Perhaps Mads Wu is the one who has truly become successful; when he gets really busy, he doesn't even come home for months at a time.
This time, working with Columbia Pictures, he was often nowhere to be seen on set. After Kang Woo-jin finished filming his scene, he heard Mads-Oh respond...
He went to audition again!
Jiang Jingshu felt a little disappointed when she didn't see her husband return, but as soon as she saw her beloved son sitting there smiling brightly at her, she immediately threw away her negative feelings and beckoned Jiang Youzhen over.
"Perfect timing, Yoo-jin, help your mother take a look at this script. I've been revising it for three months, and I'm not lying, it really has been three months, and I still can't get it to a satisfactory state."
Hearing this, Jiang Youzhen came to his senses a little. It didn't seem wrong to come back and have to work for free.
He moved closer to the desk, which was littered with crumpled papers and a thick, bound book.
Now, Jiang Jingshu types her scripts on a computer, prints them out, and binds them so that she can easily check and revise them.
After reading the introduction on the first page, Jiang Youzhen knew that this was a standard crime action movie. He was a little puzzled as to why Jiang Jingshu had been writing this type of movie in the past two years.
"Mom, this isn't a problem with the script, it's a market problem. This style isn't popular in China right now."
...
That hits the nail on the head; that's pretty much the situation right now.
Jiang Jingshu remained silent for a while, taking several deep breaths to calm herself down before speaking again, her tone tinged with resentment, "Why did you have to be so blunt? I just don't want to change my image. You know Xiuyan, right? She wrote a TV series a couple of years ago, 'Autumn in My Heart,' which, while not a huge hit, was certainly popular overseas."
The "Xiuyan" that Jiang Jingshu mentioned was a junior colleague she knew. Jiang Youzhen had met her a few times when he returned to Korea during a previous holiday. She was a very talented screenwriter, and that was his opinion at the time.
Even though he was abroad, he had heard of the TV series "Autumn in My Heart". Now that Jiang Jingshu mentioned it, he was a little suspicious. Could it be that his mother was going to jump from horror, thriller, action and crime to melodramatic, tragic love and romance?
Everyone says that transformation is distorted, but I've never seen it distorted like this.
Seeing the increasingly strange expression on Kang Woo-jin's handsome face, Kang Jung-seo sighed and voiced the question that had been troubling her for a long time: "Soo-yeon invited me to create a new work with her. To be honest, I've also been thinking about whether I should change my career path."
One by one, they're all thinking about changing careers. I don't know if they're genuinely fed up and have no ideas, or if they're being forced to change careers because of the torment this market is driving them to this point.
Jiang Youzhen agreed, saying that sometimes it's good to change your style and come up with new ideas, and at least compared to now, this suggestion is much better.
He could tell that Jiang Jingshu actually had this idea, so he nodded.
Unfortunately, he had absolutely no interest in this kind of melodramatic love story and couldn't offer any advice.
Jiang Jingshu left work early today, and the studio staff also learned that the handsome, tall young man was the boss's son.
Before being surrounded by onlookers, Jiang Youzhen quickly left the studio with Jiang Jingshu. The mother and son soon returned home, but they found several cars parked outside their house, with several drivers chatting next to them.
Upon noticing Jiang Jingshu's arrival, the drivers quickly straightened their clothes and bowed to greet her. Their gazes lingered on Jiang Youzhen for a moment, unable to recall who he was.
Someone whispered a reminder that it was writer Jiang Jingshu's son, and only then did the others realize who it was.
Those with good manners quickly greeted the boy, unaware that Jiang Youzhen was already so embarrassed he was practically crawling on the ground with his toes.
Upon entering the house, they did not see the old man in the living room. After asking the servants, they learned that the old man was in the reception room discussing some important matter with the guests.
"Isn't Grandpa just holding a nominal position at the company? How come he has so many other things to do?" Jiang Youzhen asked curiously.
"It should be the Busan amusement park project. Your grandfather has put all his business acumen into tourism these past two years."
"But... isn't he a director of the production company?"
The whole family works in the entertainment industry, including the elders. However, the elders are old and should be enjoying their retirement at home. Why are they suddenly busy again?
Jiang Jingshu looked somewhat frustrated; she couldn't understand it either.
"He's probably bored being home alone. I've tried to persuade him that getting a cat or dog would be better than wasting money on unnecessary things, but your grandfather just won't listen."
Jiang Youzhen had nothing to say about this, since he wasn't the one being bothered.
In the living room, the elderly man, upon learning that his grandson had returned, stopped talking about anything else and came out to see his grandson standing in the living room, smiling and greeting him. Overjoyed, the old man went over and took the grandson's hand, showering him with concern and care.
Jiang Jingshu silently took two steps back to the side, and when she saw that the others had also come out, she did not forget to greet them politely.
The old man proudly introduced his grandson to them, saying he attended a prestigious university, was a screenwriter, and had even participated in film production. The mere mention of "developing in Hollywood" made the group green with envy, and the compliments never stopped.
Jiang Youzhen's smile grew increasingly stiff. He genuinely disliked these kinds of occasions, especially the fake and insincere smiles on these people's faces.
This ordeal didn't last long; knowing the family was about to reunite, the guests quickly left.
Jiang Youzhen chatted with the old man for a while and then gave him the gifts he had brought back.
"Perfect timing! Grandpa's amusement park is opening soon. Here are some tickets. Take them and go play with your friends." The old man took out a few tickets from his pocket and stuffed them into Jiang Youzhen's hand before he could refuse.
"Your grandpa and mom will both be there. I've also hired a few singers to warm up the crowd. The opening ceremony has to be grand, and I'll also have your movie played at the haunted house."
"....."
Okay, okay, cannibalism and haunted houses are a perfect match, aren't they?
But Grandpa, have you forgotten something?
He doesn't have any friends in the country!
I did know someone like that a few years ago, but now...
Holding the ticket, Jiang Youzhen walked around the corridor twice. He wasn't sure if Jin Zhiyong would still remember him, but after not having been in contact for several years, he should have forgotten him long ago, not to mention there was an even younger one.
The image of the little girl smiling sweetly is still vivid in my memory. After she went abroad, he never contacted her again, and there were no new messages in my email. As time went by, the longing faded.
