Chapter 54 Face Change
Chapter 54 Face Change
The fat man grumbled and swore as he strode forward, with Chang Biao and Chen Shi following behind him.
Despite Chen Shi's best efforts, he soon fell behind. Chang Biao ran back to help him, but Chen Shi politely declined.
Ever since the photo of Chen being carried on the shoulders of a fat man was published on the official website, Chen has become particularly averse to physical assistance from another man.
The fat man ran a long way, then looked back and saw that the two were gone. So he ran back and saw Chen Shi still inching forward, and instinctively wanted to carry him.
Chen Shi reached out to stop him: "If you pull the same stunt as last time, I'm not going today."
"Then you'd better hurry up and walk."
"It won't go any faster, it'll stay at this speed."
Chang Biao whispered from the side, "Daqiang, you're walking too fast. We're not going to arrest anyone."
"Fine, fine, I'll move slowly with you." The fat man resigned himself to his fate.
It took the three of them twice as long to get to the administration building. The publicity department was on the second floor, and there was only one young man in the office. He wore glasses, had a parted hairstyle, and his upper teeth protruded slightly.
Chen Shi knew this person was called Xiao Yu, a propaganda officer. He and Xiao Yu didn't usually interact much, only seeing each other a few times during large meetings.
Upon seeing the three fat men enter, Xiao Yu immediately stood up to greet them.
"Hey Fatty, what's wrong? It's rare for you to come to our department. Is there anything I can do for you?"
"Who are you? Do I know you?" the fat man said, turning his back on him.
"No, Fatty, it's me, Xiao Yu," the buck-toothed man said, feeling a chill run down his spine. "I even treated you to a meal last month."
"Don't talk nonsense, I don't remember at all." The fat man coughed tactically and quickly changed the subject, "Tell me, what's the deal with that photo on the official website? We're here to demand our rights."
Chen Shi took out his phone and showed Xiao Yu the photos from the scene.
The moment Chen Shi saw the photo, he clearly wanted to laugh at the little buck teeth, but he managed to hold it in.
"Who took this photo? Tell me," the fat man said arrogantly to the junior officer.
The guy with the buck teeth pushed up his glasses and said, "Fatty, here's what happened. The situation was very critical, and our department couldn't get to the scene immediately. Apparently, it was other field team members who asked bystanders for photos on their phones."
"The photography skills are a bit rough, but you know, frontline workers are afraid of being photographed and don't want to take pictures of others. Most of the photos we receive are of this quality," Little Bucktooth pointed to the photos. "Those who think of taking photos first in times of crisis are people with a sense of publicity."
These words silenced the three men for a moment. To be honest, their photography skills weren't much better than these; the last time they went to the lottery station to photograph people's heads, the photos Fatty and Chang Biao took were probably only slightly better than these. The male field agents of the Supernatural Abilities Bureau were all pretty much the same in terms of skill level.
The fat man thought for a long time, then suddenly realized something was wrong: "Whatever people send you, you just report it to higher authorities? Don't you even check it? Why release these kinds of photos?"
"Oh dear, my brother, you've really wronged me!" Xiao Yu rubbed his hands together, feeling aggrieved. "When they post photos online, they never consider what our department needs, but rather what good you field staff have. We don't have a choice. And when we submit them to the General Administration's Publicity Department, they don't even review them; they just publish them as is."
"I don't care, the root of the problem lies with you guys." The fat man turned into a rogue, shoving his way in front of Xiao Yu's desk. "You guys have to compensate me."
Xiao Yu's face flushed red with anxiety, and just as he was wondering what to say, a voice came from outside the door: "Has the fatso had enough?"
A middle-aged woman walked in, her hair tied up, her face covered in thick foundation, giving her a serious and unsmiling expression.
Then Chen Shi witnessed the world's fastest face-changing moment. In a second, the fat man switched from arrogance to fawning, bowing and quickly approaching: "Section Chief Wang, Sister Wang, look at you, why are you in such a hurry? I was just joking with Xiao Yu."
Sister Wang's full name is Wang Guifang. She is the head of the publicity department and has worked in the bureau for nearly twenty years. She has more seniority than Lao Zheng.
Chang Biao and Chen Shi stood behind, glancing sideways at the fat man. Wasn't he quite imposing when he came in?
"You've gone too far with the joke, get lost." Sister Wang clearly didn't give the fat man any face, but when her gaze passed over him and landed on Chen Shi standing behind him, her expression immediately changed. The change was even faster than the fat man's, and the foundation on her face started to fall off in a flurry, making her look a little scary.
"This must be Xiao Chen?" Sister Wang immediately grasped Chen Shi's hand. Chen Shi, with his leg injury, didn't pull away. "You've made numerous outstanding contributions since joining the bureau. You're young and promising! Director Liu told us that young cadres like you should be widely publicized. Our department is planning to do a special interview with you next week. What do you think?"
Chen Shi, his hand being held, was momentarily speechless. Sister Wang's mood changed even faster than Fatty's; one second she was glaring at Fatty, the next she was all smiles and politeness towards him. He glanced at Fatty, who stood there looking aggrieved; the world where only he was hurt had been created.
"Xiao Chen, think about all the cases you've solved since you joined the bureau these past two days. I'll have Xiao Yu come over and write the drafts for you. Don't worry, it won't interfere with your normal work hours."
"It's alright, I apologize for bothering you... No, Section Chief Wang, you're too kind. Let me do it. I'm still new here, it wouldn't be appropriate for Xiao Yu to come over."
"Perfect, perfect." Xiaoyu immediately came over from the side to make up for not speaking to Chen Shi earlier. "Don't worry, Teacher Chen, just tell me what time is convenient for you, and I'll come over. The time is entirely up to you."
Seeing how polite the head of the propaganda department and the staff member were to him, Chen Shi suddenly felt that he had been a terrible person to come with the fat man to interrogate him.
So he turned to the fat man and said, "Brother Fatty, the publicity department is so busy, it's really not right for us to be here and delay their normal work. Let's go back."
Fatty: "............."
"I'm asking you a question, what do you say?" Sister Wang transformed back into Abbess Miejue, her gaze sweeping coldly over them.
The fat man nodded hurriedly in agreement, then pulled a trick of fabricating a story: "Biaozi, I already said I wasn't coming, I wasn't coming. You're so petty. It's just about the photos, why did you have to come all the way to the publicity department to make a scene? You're so inconsiderate!"
Chang Biao had been standing quietly to the side the whole time without saying a word. He was stunned when he was suddenly called out.
He was trembling with anger and ran away. Even from a distance, you could hear his trembling accusation coming from the other end of the corridor: "You're so annoying!"
Sister Wang watched Chang Biao run away, then looked back at the fat man and said expressionlessly, "You submit a statement to me tomorrow. It doesn't need to be long; just explain why you brought your team members to cause trouble during work hours."
"Sister Wang, we're not here to wander around; we came during our lunch break."
"Is it lunch break now?"
The fat man glanced at the clock on the wall; it was 11:45.
"Fifteen minutes to go."
Sister Wang: "Then write 'fifteen minutes left between shifts'."
As he left the propaganda department, the fat man muttered to himself that he hadn't consulted the almanac or any other superstitious beliefs before going out today.
"You were so tough just now, why did you cower in front of Sister Wang?"
"What do you know? She's my mother-in-law's best friend."
"What's wrong?"
The fat man, with a nonchalant expression, said, "You understand neither your mother-in-law nor your best friend."
