Chapter 43 The Hothead Who Added Scenes
Chapter 43 The Hothead Who Added Scenes
Outside the interrogation room, a one-way mirror reflects the entire interior.
The fat man squinted at Aman, who was slumped in a chair inside, his knuckles cracking unconsciously.
This kid is really tough. Last night, after three rounds of interrogation and beatings, his face was covered in bruises and looked miserable. But after a good night's sleep, he actually regained most of his energy.
Not only is he stubborn, but he's also incredibly tight-lipped. During the entire night and morning of interrogation, he kept repeating the same thing: "I've confessed everything I need to." If you asked any more questions, he would shut up and play dead. When pushed too far, he would just shrink back and refuse to utter a single useful piece of information.
After all this trouble, the members of Group Five knew nothing about him except that his nickname was Aman.
"How about we take care of him again?" The fat man rolled up his sleeves, his eyes brimming with eagerness.
Everyone present glanced at him, knowing perfectly well what was going on. This wasn't an interrogation at all; he was simply using his position to vent his personal grievances.
He was the one who presided over the interrogation for most of the day, and his methods were ridiculously monotonous. He would slam his fist on the table, glare, and crack his knuckles to create momentum. He would also sneak a couple of slaps in the blind spot of the surveillance camera to vent his anger.
Holding her notebook, Su Xiaohe observed quietly through the glass for a while before softly asking, "Is this the real culprit who killed Li Qian and Zhu Dahai?"
Chen Shi shook his head: "With this level of intelligence, he can't handle such a sophisticated serial murder case."
These words hit the nail on the head. From the moment Aman appeared until now, he has always exuded the air of an unlucky and reckless hothead. His actions are crude and chaotic, completely different from the meticulous and efficient killer in the case.
"To put it bluntly, he's just stupid." The fat man grinned, then his expression turned serious. "So, what's next?"
"We have to pry his mouth open." Chen Shi's gaze returned to the interrogation room, his eyes calm. "Even if he wasn't the real killer, his ability to change his face is definitely related to these two cases."
Everyone turned to look at him. Chen Shi stood up straight, exuding an aura of dominance that seemed to survey the entire room. Among the entire Group Five, no one was more adept at manipulating people's hearts and conducting psychological interrogations. The reason they hadn't acted yet was simply because Fatty's wife had been impersonated and locked in the closet, leaving her terrified; everyone had tacitly allowed Fatty to vent his anger first.
Now that the anger has subsided, it's time to get down to business.
The interrogation room door was pushed open. Aman, wearing special handcuffs to suppress his supernatural abilities, looked up and saw Chen Shi, who had difficulty walking, and Su Xiaohe, who had a quiet expression. His tense shoulders instantly relaxed visibly.
Compared to the fat man who started hitting people without warning, and the bald man who tried to comfort him while simultaneously adding insult to injury, this young man in front of him seemed at least reasonable and would never resort to violence.
Chen Shi sat down steadily opposite him, glanced at the injury on his face, and said in a calm tone, "Should we treat the wound first? It looks quite scary."
Aman didn't even look up, and uttered two words curtly: "No need."
"The cut on your forehead is still bleeding," Chen Shi reminded him.
"fine."
"Really not going to?"
"Need not!"
"Alright then." Chen Shi didn't insist. He stood up, took a clean band-aid from his pocket, and gently placed it on the corner of the table. "I'll leave it here. Let me know if you need it anytime."
Aman: "..."
Su Xiaohe stood to the side, desperately trying to suppress her laughter; her cheeks were almost stiff.
Chen Shi sat down again and casually asked, "Your name is Aman? That's a nice name. Who gave you that name?"
His response was a deathly silence.
Chen Shi understood perfectly; this was a typical greenhorn who had just entered the circle, someone who wouldn't listen to reason and wouldn't respond to coaxing.
The next second, he suddenly raised his hand and slammed it heavily on the table! Bang! The loud noise made even Su Xiaohe next to him tremble.
"Speak! Did you kill him?!"
Aman was instantly jolted awake, instinctively screaming in protest, "I didn't kill anyone!"
"Whether it was you or not is not up to you to decide." Chen Shi lightly tapped the notebook with the tip of his pen, but his tone was full of pressure. "We have confirmed that the perpetrators of the two murders are superhumans with the ability to change their appearance. And you happen to have the exact same ability, and last night you openly attacked public officials and their families."
"The chain of evidence is complete and irrefutable; you can't deny it."
Aman's eyes widened instantly, his mind buzzing, completely unable to process what was happening. He looked at Chen Shi, who remained calm and composed, then at Su Xiaohe, who stood beside him with a serious and unsmiling expression. His expression shifted several times, from initial confusion and bewilderment to deep resentment, and finally, he was completely consumed by rage.
"Is this how your Supernatural Abilities Bureau handles cases?!" Aman's chest heaved with anger. "This is outrageous! Since you've already convicted me, why bother with the interrogation? Just sentence me directly!"
"That's right, that's how we sometimes do things." Chen Shi accepted his accusation frankly, his tone completely calm. "You'll have to get used to it."
Aman was so angry his teeth itched, and a bellyful of curses was stuck in his throat, but he dared not utter a word. He clearly remembered that behind the one-way glass, there stood that fat man who had no sense of restraint.
After taking several deep breaths to suppress his anger, he finally managed to utter only a feeble accusation: "You're framing me; you can always find a reason!"
"If you want to frame someone, someone has to take the blame, right?" Chen Shi's tone suddenly shifted, becoming more relaxed. "Of course, we're not being unreasonable. Whether the case can be overturned depends entirely on your cooperation."
"You keep saying you didn't commit the crime, so what were you doing impersonating us and following us here last night?"
Aman was in a complete internal struggle. He didn't consider himself a good person, living in a gray area, but today he felt like he had the worst luck imaginable. These people were not only ruthless and adept at psychological manipulation, but they were also terrifyingly skilled at fabricating wrongful convictions.
Judging from the limping young man's posture, if he continues to remain silent, he will definitely be blamed for this huge mistake.
After weighing the pros and cons, Aman finally spoke up, her voice tinged with frustration: "I just wanted to see how far you've gotten in your investigation, and maybe get some information out of you. I really didn't intend to kill anyone; I just wanted to test how useful my special ability really is."
"So, following us and impersonating staff were all things you added on your own?" Chen Shi accurately grasped the key point.
Aman paused for a moment, then nodded stiffly.
"You saw it too," Chen Shi said calmly. "Your acting was atrocious. It was precisely because you showed up on your own that we were able to track you down and catch you."
"Have you ever considered that the real mastermind, knowing that you exposed his clues, would let you go so easily?" These words struck Aman's heart like a thunderbolt.
His body trembled violently, his lips quivered as he tried to explain, but he ultimately shut them tightly, his face turning deathly pale.
Chen Shi slowly closed his notebook and made a move to stand up: "If you don't want to talk, that's fine, we won't force you. Anyway, we're just killing time, let Fatty and Brother Biao come and keep you company."
"No! Wait!" Aman looked up in a panic, her eyes filled with turmoil. She couldn't take it anymore. "I'll talk! I'll tell you everything! But you have to keep it a secret! You absolutely can't let that person know that I betrayed him! If he finds out, I'm finished!"
Chen Shi, with his harmless demeanor, said, "It depends on your performance. I'm a very reasonable person. If you cooperate with me, I'll protect you."
Aman completely let down her guard: "His name is Huanlang! I don't know his real name, and I've never seen what he looks like!"
"My ability to change faces can only last for half an hour at most, and it has many flaws, but he is particularly powerful. I have never seen his true face from beginning to end."
Su Xiaohe, who was standing nearby, immediately pressed on, "Did he commit the murders of Li Qian and Zhu Dahai?"
"I...I'm not sure." Aman's voice trailed off. "He never lets me participate in these crucial events, these killings. I have no access to the core of things."
"So what do you usually do for him?" Chen Shi pressed.
"He made me observe other people every day." Aman scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed. "He said that if you want to perfectly become a person, you not only have to imitate their appearance and demeanor, but also thoroughly understand their personality, temperament, and habits, otherwise you will be seen through at a glance."
Upon hearing this, Chen Shi retorted, "You've explained the principles quite clearly, so how come your acting is still so terrible?"
Aman blushed, lowered her head in shame, and dared not refute.
Chen Shi turned a page in his notebook and continued, "How does Phantom Wolf usually contact you?"
"He never contacts me regularly; he's always the one who initiates contact." Aman's voice was filled with fear. "He said it's the safest way, so he won't be tracked. I asked him why he doesn't use a cell phone or social media, and he said electronic devices are full of vulnerabilities and it's easy for the Special Abilities Bureau to pinpoint his location."
"He is extremely cautious in everything he does."
Chen Shi listened quietly the whole time, his gaze fixed on Aman's emotional spectrum. The spectrum was stable and unwavering, without the slightest hint of lying.
This person wasn't lying. We've basically exhausted all the information we can get now, and there's no point in pressing further. The rest can only be investigated gradually.
Chen Shi closed his notebook, leaned on his cane to get up, and stopped abruptly at the door, turning back to look at Aman. "Thank you for your cooperation. No one will lay a hand on you again."
The interrogation room door closed, and Aman slumped into the chair, letting out a long sigh of relief, all the strength draining from his body instantly.
In the corridor, Chen Shi leaned against the wall, gently rubbing his aching ankles, feeling the fatigue from handling cases for days.
Su Xiaohe, carrying her notebook, quickly caught up, sorting through the statements she had just heard: "Teacher Chen, although his statement was fragmented, the clue about the Phantom Wolf is crucial. Many details can be cross-verified, making it very valuable."
"Okay, record and file it first." Chen Shi nodded casually. "I have something to do tomorrow, so I won't be coming to the station."
Su Xiaohe was slightly taken aback, then looked up in confusion: "Where are you going?"
Chen Shi turned on his phone screen, and a text message popped up: "Tomorrow's the weekend, same place. I haven't settled the score with you for that hindsight thing you did last time."
