Chapter 2 Our Father and Son Are Destined
Chapter 2 Our Father and Son Are Destined
The people at the hospital are fed up with this old man, Wang.
Old Wang berated everyone in the hospital, from top to bottom, including the hospital director.
Not to mention the dean, when he's unhappy, he even points his finger at the mayor on TV and curses him.
Some of the nurses at the hospital privately said that Old Wang should go to the psychiatric ward.
He not only curses at people all day long, but he also smokes in the hospital room.
When Dawei first visited Old Wang, he presented him with a flower basket and fruit that he had bought at his own expense, but Old Wang immediately knocked them over with his cane.
They started by launching into a tirade of abuse.
"They're doing all this fancy stuff again."
People like you are squandering the government's money.
I don't need you to see it.
If you have so much free time, go and visit those elderly people living alone in the countryside.
"You guys dare to reimburse 800 for something like this that costs 80? I don't want this kind of heartless stuff!"
David looked completely innocent: "Grandpa, I bought this with my own money."
Old Wang was somewhat skeptical, looking at the young man in front of him with suspicion.
This old man has been in the business world his whole life, and he's seen a lot of people. He's long since developed the ability to judge people.
Look at Chen Dawei, he has a dignified appearance and a heroic air about him.
And he looks like someone who has been to school.
She was even willing to buy things for him at her own expense to come see him, which made her somewhat interested in Chen Dawei, and her attitude improved slightly.
"Is there something you want from me?"
"No, I'm just here on behalf of the organization to visit you."
How old are you?
"Exactly 30."
"Looks like you don't have any connections either, still doing this kind of work at 30."
"You flatter me."
"Has he been staying at the Laogan Bureau all this time?"
"No, it was handled at the county government office before."
"Oh? One of Qiao Yong's men?" Old Wang's eyes showed some surprise.
"It was County Magistrate Qiao who promoted me."
Chen Dawei closed the ward door, took a cloth and covered the glass in the door, took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and put one in Old Wang's hair.
Old Wang immediately smiled.
"You're not stupid, are you? You're quite quick-witted, how did you end up in such a sorry state?"
The two of them started chatting.
Through the bits and pieces of information revealed in Old Wang's words, Chen Dawei roughly learned about his background.
He taught in Kyoto for many years and was a professor.
Later, because one of his adopted sons—a big shot in Kyoto—got into trouble in the struggle, his adopted son sent him to Toyama Prefecture to recuperate in order to avoid being implicated.
Old Wang's wife was from Yuanshan County. She has passed away, and Old Wang still has some affection for this place.
Old Wang also has a daughter who lives abroad and works as an artist; he hasn't seen her for many years.
Because of his adopted son, Old Wang was ostracized in Yuanshan County. Nobody wanted to get involved with him, for fear of being implicated by his adopted son.
Chen Dawei didn't care.
He's already in this state, how much worse can he get?
Seeing that Old Wang was all alone and sick, Dawei felt sorry for the old man and took good care of him.
When Dawei was at work, he would ask his father, Chen Shouren, to go and see Old Wang, play chess with him, and chat with him.
When Dawei was detained, his mother was also hit and fractured her bones and was admitted to the People's Hospital. Dawei's father simply took care of both of them.
Chen Shouren was an honest and simple man who had worked on the farm for half his life. He was kind-hearted, and Old Wang liked him. They got along well.
Therefore, he has a special connection with Dawei's family.
When Chen Shouren heard that Old Wang was always constipated, he asked someone to buy some local honey from his hometown and asked Dawei to deliver it to Old Wang.
Dawei stood at the door of the cadre ward and glanced inside.
Old Wang was lying on his side on the bed, his back looking lonely, as if he were looking at something.
David knocked on the door.
Old Wang put down what he was holding, turned around and glanced at the door. He was about to get angry and yell at someone when he saw it was Dawei, so he immediately smiled.
"Ah Wei's here! Come in quickly, it's been a while..."
This was the first time Dawei had visited Old Wang since he was released from the detention room.
When Old Wang saw that a tuft of hair had turned white on Chen Dawei's forehead, he was immediately taken aback. He then understood what had happened, pointed to the sofa by the bed, and gestured for Chen Dawei to sit down.
Dawei didn't sit down. Instead, he made a cup of honey water and handed it to Old Wang.
"The wild honey my dad makes is good for constipation."
"Don't drink yet. Tell me what happened to you. Your dad can't explain it either. What are they doing to you?"
Recalling those days of being persecuted, Dawei felt a chill run down his spine.
Lin Wangyou, the secretary of the county discipline inspection commission, doesn't seem like much at first glance, but when it comes to using his methods, he's truly ruthless.
David hadn't told anyone about these things, and there was no point in doing so anyway, so he just mentioned it briefly to brush it off.
From just a few words from Dawei, Old Wang had already grasped a lot of key information; he was very familiar with these things in officialdom.
"Child, you've suffered. Qiao Yong has already lost. Why do you still insist on holding on?"
"Because he has been kind to me."
"..."
Old Wang was stunned. How many people these days still know how to be grateful?
Most of them are opportunistic and forget morality for personal gain.
Young people like David are a rare sight these days.
"What is this?"
David pointed to a photo album on the bed.
That's what Old Wang was looking at while hiding.
Old Wang gave an awkward laugh and touched the album cover: "My daughter's photos..."
It seemed he missed his daughter, so David didn't press him further.
Since I met Old Wang, I've never seen his daughter visit, not even once.
There is clearly a significant rift between the father and daughter.
"Hiss—" Old Wang groaned, clutching his stomach.
David immediately pressed the call button.
The nurse came in, checked the situation, and gave Old Wang a bottle of glycerin suppository: "Just pour the whole bottle down your throat. If you don't expel it soon, something bad will happen."
David understood; Old Wang's stomach pain was caused by constipation. He immediately asked, "You've been relying on this thing all this time?"
"What else?" the nurse asked impatiently.
"Using this too much can be harmful to people."
"Do you have any other good ideas?" the nurse asked, pursing her lips.
Previously, Dawei's grandfather had done the same thing. Later, after hearing that excessive use of glycerin suppositories was bad, his father, Chen Shouren, started using his hands.
These nurses certainly wouldn't want to do it this way.
There was no other way but for David to do it himself.
He tossed the glycerin suppository aside, ran downstairs to buy finger cots, and helped Old Wang to the toilet.
"Child, what are you doing?"
"Don't worry, I've helped my grandfather before and I have experience. You can't keep using enemas, or you'll become dependent on them, and it will cause your digestive system to deteriorate, which will be even more troublesome."
"I can't have the child..."
Old Wang was truly moved.
He'd seen plenty of people who played along, but none were like Dawei.
This child is genuinely honest and kind.
"It's fine.
My grandfather had a bad life and passed away early. If he were alive, he would be about your age.
We two are destined to be together.
I treat you like my grandfather.
Please consider me your grandson.
Isn't it only natural for a grandson to do something for his grandfather?
Old Wang was a little embarrassed at first, but he accepted it later.
His feelings for Dawei gradually changed, and he thought how wonderful it would be if Dawei were really his grandson.
That night, David returned home and was just about to fall asleep.
At midnight, Old Wang suddenly called Dawei and asked him to come to the hospital.
The phone call was so late; it must be something important. Dawei got dressed and rushed over.
The hospital ward was quiet.
Old Wang sat on the sofa, having changed out of his hospital gown into a crisp, clean suit and shiny black leather shoes.
His entire demeanor became much more sophisticated, resembling that of a dignified and wise elder.
"Dawei's here, please have a seat."
Old Wang patted the empty space next to the sofa.
David sat down with a suspicious look on his face.
"Why did you call me here so late? Is something wrong?"
David was a little nervous, feeling that the old man was acting mysteriously today, wondering what he was up to.
