Chapter 14 Female Doctor
Chapter 14 Female Doctor
Lin Ximeng gripped the bracelet and retraced his steps back to the shelter.
As soon as I entered, I saw security guard Tom chatting enthusiastically with a cleaning lady in her fifties, holding a cup of hot cocoa in his hand and taking small sips from time to time, looking like he was enjoying his leisure time.
"Hey, look what I brought back?" Lin Ximeng walked over and took out a bracelet, waving it in front of the other person.
"My God! You really found it?" Security guard Tom rushed over with a cup of hot cocoa, and when he saw the silver chain in Lin Simon's hand, he almost dropped the cup and smashed it on the ground.
"I searched the parking lot three times this morning, and even fell into a pile of cardboard boxes, but I didn't even get to see a single hair of that cat."
He leaned closer and stared at the "E.J." on the inside of the bracelet, his round eyes wide. "If Emily knew, she'd give you all her treasured chocolates."
Before Simon could reply, security guard Tom dragged him toward the infirmary, boasting as they passed the reception desk, "See? We found the bracelet. I'm not bragging, but I knew my eye for talent was right!"
Lucy, the receptionist, looked up from the pile of documents: "Don't flatter yourself. Who said 'the cat must have run far away'?"
Security guard Tom was clearly unfazed by these words and continued to excitedly lead Simon Lin towards the infirmary.
Led by Tom, Simon Lin went up the stairs, through the corridor, and arrived at the infirmary.
"Emily, are you there?" Tom, the security guard, knocked on the door.
There were only two knocks on the door of the infirmary when hurried footsteps came from inside.
Emily peeked out, looking at the two people outside the door with some confusion.
Her soft blonde hair was tied in a low ponytail, her skin was fair and delicate, and her eyes behind thin-rimmed silver glasses, though somewhat naive, were very charming.
She looks like she just graduated recently.
Lin Ximeng held out his hand, letting the bracelet hang down. "Are you looking for this bracelet?"
Emily's blonde ponytail swayed, and the moment she saw the bracelet, a look of surprise appeared on her face: "I really found it! I thought I'd be locked up at home under curfew for the next two weeks."
Lin Ximeng was completely confused, and the security guard Tom immediately whispered an explanation from the side: "Her parents are very conservative and a bit strict."
Unlike the generally open atmosphere in America, many white families with Christian faiths still tend to be conservative.
"Thank you......"
Just call me Simon.
After thanking Simon Lin, Emily twirled the bracelet twice. "How did you catch that cat? This morning, Uncle Tom and I cornered it, but it darted away faster than my dad could check up on us. Uncle Tom almost fell into the trash can."
Tom, the security guard, scratched his head a little embarrassedly: "Well, the cardboard box was too slippery... Um, you guys chat first, I'll go make myself a cup of cocoa."
Before he could finish speaking, security guard Tom slipped away somewhat embarrassedly. He was clearly still a little ashamed of being teased by a cat, especially in front of his lovely niece.
"It's thanks to some street experience and the warm and selfless help from other kind homeless people."
Lin Simon thought of the red-haired man with the earring and the others. He had to admit that after he mastered the way to communicate with them—fists—they did indeed exude the enthusiasm of the West Coast.
As he spoke, Lin Ximeng stretched out his arm and spun around, trying to demonstrate "how to block a cat." But when he pulled on his back, he heard a "ripping" sound as the back of his clothes ripped.
"What happened to your clothes? There are several long tears." Emily looked at Simon Lin's back and said after a moment's thought:
"There's cat hair stuck to it; was it scratched by the cat?"
Lin Ximeng then touched his back, his fingertips brushing against the rough, torn skin, and couldn't help but complain, "No wonder my back felt cold earlier; I thought it was the wind blowing in."
Recalling the process of catching the stray cat, Lin Ximeng felt that the scratches were caused when the cat climbed onto his back, but fortunately, the scratches did not break his skin.
"I remember there are some old clothes here at the shelter," Emily quickly added, worried that Simon Lin might find them unpalatable.
"But they've all been cleaned by us, they're very clean."
Lin Ximeng tugged at his clothes and laughed, "We homeless people aren't that picky. As long as it's better than this rag I'm wearing, it's fine."
"Then I'll go look for it for you."
A moment later, Emily returned, carrying a black hoodie in her arms. The hem of the hoodie still smelled faintly of mothballs. "A college student donated this last time. I haven't worn it much. Try it on and see if you can wear it."
Lin Ximeng took the clothes and was about to change when he saw that Emily was still in the city. He couldn't help but say, "I need to change. I heard your family is quite strict..."
Emily wrinkled her nose, a faint pink tinge appearing at the tip. "Those are my parents. I'm a doctor, do you think I'd care about a patient's health?"
"All right."
Lin Ximeng shrugged, took off his tattered clothes, revealing his eight-pack abs.
Emily's eyes suddenly lit up; she was clearly surprised to see such a beautiful eight-pack on the homeless man.
Just as Lin Ximeng was about to put on his black hoodie, he heard footsteps.
"Hey, guess what? I think I saw that stray cat again."
As security guard Tom carried the hot cocoa into the infirmary, he noticed Emily staring at Simon Lin, who was shirtless.
"oh--"
Tom's mouth formed an "O" shape, and after only a moment's hesitation, he said to Emily, "You know, not everyone is as conservative as your stubborn old man."
Then, security guard Tom placed the hot cocoa on the table and said to Simon Lin, "Your hot cocoa, with the two swirls of cream I promised you."
After saying that, he walked out the door without looking back.
Distracted like this, Emily, who had been so forthright, suddenly became a little embarrassed, and her cheeks flushed slightly.
"What's wrong?" Lin Simon coughed.
"Do I smell because I haven't showered all day?"
"No, no," Emily composed herself and changed the subject.
"It's just... I haven't seen such a healthy and beautiful body in a long time, especially considering that I've been homeless on the streets recently."
"Look at the muscles in your arms and the lines in your waist. Compared to those people who come to the shelter for treatment, they are either skinny or bloated from eating junk food for a long time."
She suddenly laughed, her tone joking, "Seriously, if people from pharmaceutical companies saw your body, they might chase after you—they love recruiting healthy homeless people as 'drug test subjects'."
"Is this a new drug trial? I think I've heard of it before."
Simon Lin had seen reports that West Coast pharmaceutical companies often hire people to conduct human trials in order to collect data from clinical trials.
Among them are some drugs that are far from meeting clinical standards. These companies didn't even fully disclose the side effects before tricking homeless people into signing their consent forms.
Including last night when we were chatting at the camp, he heard Riley say that a homeless man tried a certain pharmaceutical company's painkiller in order to earn a few hundred dollars. As a result, he vomited and had diarrhea for three days and couldn't eat anything. In the end, no one ever saw him again.
Lin Ximeng put on a black hoodie and said with a smile, "Don't worry, my abs and fists aren't from nowhere. You can ask that stray cat thief if you don't believe me."
Emily paused for a moment, then laughed out loud: "That's true, you can even catch such a clever cat, so you can definitely protect yourself."
After saying that, Emily opened her wallet, took out five ten-dollar bills, and handed them to Simon Lin. "This is the agreed-upon payment."
Lin Ximeng didn't rush to take it. "If possible, could you switch to 'Oseltamivir granules'? It's the drug that the news said can treat influenza C variant type 3."
