Chapter 6 progresses rapidly
The boy's body suddenly trembled like a leaf, even though he had just fallen so hard without crying out.
The woman quickly hugged the boy and shook her head at the overseer.
"Ahhh!"
All that came out were "uh-huh" sounds.
"She's a mute girl!"
Fang Jianqiu understood.
"Fuck fuck! The offspring of pigs are indeed pigs! They can't even do this simple thing right! Get the hell out of my way! Of course, the offspring of pigs also need to be properly disciplined with a whip!"
The dark-skinned overseer roared and raised his whip, ready to strike.
But the mute girl stood in his way, preventing him from making a move.
But this was certainly not a problem for him; what difference did it make who he hit? He just needed a motive to vent his anger.
So the whip lashed out without any mercy.
"Snapped!"
The blow landed squarely on the mute girl's thin back.
With a dull thud as flesh tore, the mute girl's coarse cloth clothes ripped open instantly, revealing a bloody gash.
She curled up in pain, letting out a muffled groan, but still held tightly to protect the child behind her.
The overseer's lashing only served to further ignite his savage nature.
He looked at the mute girl's face contorted in pain, a lewd smile spreading across his lips.
"Oh ho, you're quite protective of your son. I see you're a bit thin, but you have a certain charm."
The foreman stopped hitting her and grabbed the mute girl by the hair, roughly pulling her up from the ground.
"Come on! Come in with me! Since you feel so sorry for this little pig, then take the punishment for him! Hehehe!"
The foreman grinned maliciously as he dragged the mute girl towards the nearby cabin like a dead dog.
The mute girl did not resist.
She glanced back at the boy who was still trembling on the ground, then obediently let the devil drag her into the darkness.
She knew that this way, the child would no longer be beaten.
"Sister, sister~"
The boy watched as the mute girl was dragged away, his lips trembling, and he finally couldn't hold back his tears.
His body was still trembling, and he couldn't even stand up, falling to the ground again.
The wooden barrel was overturned again, but fortunately the supervisor wasn't there this time...
Fang Jianqiu's head was spinning; when the overseer whipped the mute girl, he almost couldn't hold back.
He was only a few meters away from the overseer, and if he had made a move then, he was confident he could have taken down the foreigner.
But what happens next...?
"Click—"
A slight, crisp sound.
Fang Jianqiu looked down and saw that the handle of the sturdy wooden sickle in his hand had been cracked by his own hands.
He stood up and walked towards the boy.
"Brother Fang?!"
Ye Lang was startled by his behavior and subconsciously tried to reach out and grab Fang Xiong, but Fang Jianqiu walked very fast and he couldn't reach the hem of his clothes.
Fang Jianqiu's actions were quite sudden, after all, that foreigner had just "shown off his power" here, and all the Chinese were silent.
Even though the overseer is no longer there, no one dares to make a fuss.
Fang Jianqiu came to the boy's side, squatted down and picked up the cornbread with him.
"Thank...thank you...big brother..."
The boy's voice was still choked and trembling, but he still tried his best to thank Fang Jianqiu.
Fang Jianqiu simply shook his head, quickly picked up the cakes, and then took two wooden buckets and headed towards the place where the food was being distributed.
The boy followed closely behind him.
Not far away, on the ground, the white-haired old man who had been feigning sleep opened his eyes slightly, his cloudy gaze lingering on Fang Jianqiu's upright back for a moment before closing them again.
"What? You're already showing kindness on your first day here? Why don't you take a piss and look at yourself in the mirror?"
Foreman Lin San strolled over at some point, holding a thin bamboo stick in his hand, looking at Fang Jianqiu with a gloating expression, and then at the boy.
"And you little beast! You can't even lift a bucket properly, you're a complete waste! If it weren't for the foreman's kindness, he would have beaten you to death!"
Lin San made a sarcastic remark, then shouted:
"Listen up, everyone! Rules are rules!"
"You bunch of new losers, you just arrived today, and you haven't done your quota of work yet, so you won't get any food!"
"Want a meal? You'll have to wait until tonight! Right now, I'll just give you a couple of sips of water, so you don't die of thirst and bring bad luck!"
Fang Jianqiu ignored his words, put down the wooden bucket, and returned to his original spot to rest.
He had originally intended to scoop up a ladle of water from the water vat to drink and moisten his throat.
But when he got closer, he saw that the water in the tank was murky, with dead insects and unidentified flocculent matter floating on it, and it had a strange smell.
Drinking this water would probably be more potent than taking a laxative, and might even give you cholera or dysentery.
"At this time of year, on this island, there shouldn't be any shortage of rain. In fact, drinking rainwater might be more reliable..."
Just over ten minutes later, the laborers were driven back to the fields by foreman Lin San and began their arduous labor once again.
"The 104th..."
"The 105th..."
Fang Jianqiu silently counted the sugarcane that had been cut down.
As the sun began to set, the oppressive heat in the fields gradually dissipated. It was nearing evening, but there were still several hours before the workers would finish their shift.
"The 736th..."
Fang Jianqiu cut down another sugarcane, threw it into the sugarcane pile beside him, then tucked the sickle into his waistband, bent down, picked up the sugarcane pile, and walked towards the pile beside the dirt road.
The hard labor that had lasted for several hours left his face covered in sweat, the marks left by the sweat that had just evaporated.
Fang Jianqiu remained expressionless, his eyelids slightly lowered, seemingly having completely embraced the identity of the park's mule.
Only in a place where no one can see it.
In his eyes, the experience bar, which represented the progress of rune interpretation, was already more than a third full!
"At most tomorrow, I'll be able to unlock my first Hextech scope, a universal scope with 100% accuracy..."
Reaching the side of the dirt road, he put down the pile of sugarcane and turned to leave.
But then, a muffled voice rang out:
"Hey, you over there, you little pestle, stop right there!"
He turned his head slightly and saw a fair-skinned man with a flushed face standing in front of him.
Fang Jianqiu wasn't face-blind; he recognized the white foreigner immediately as Tom, the man who transported Chinese.
At this moment, Tom's face was flushed, and his body odor mixed with the smell of alcohol attacked Fang Jianqiu's sense of smell, making him frown deeply.
The foreigner, holding a bottle of liquor in his right hand, draped it over Fang Jianqiu's shoulder. He then looked around, noticing Fang Jianqiu's noticeably taller pile of sugarcane than the others, and, reeking of alcohol, said:
"Hahaha, you...you yellow-skinned monkeys, you were born for this job!"
"Look at you, you're one of the new recruits, aren't you? Tall and strong, you're a real good mule. Keep up the good work, you'll get plenty of pig feed, hahaha!"
As Tom, the white foreigner, spoke, he patted Fang Jianqiu's chest with his hand.
But Fang Jianqiu just stood there, staring at the drunkard without saying a word.
The foreigner received no response and felt bored.
"Hmph, a beast is a beast, how could it possibly understand human language? Cough~ Ptooey!"
He suddenly spat on Fang Jianqiu's shoes, then swayed away.
Fang Jianqiu's eyes grew increasingly monotonous and empty; when he looked at the swaying foreigner, it was as if he were looking at a corpse.
He patted the shoulder where the foreigner had put his arm around him, then casually tore off a sugarcane leaf, squatted down, and wiped away the filth before turning and walking toward the field.
Ye Lang had been secretly observing what had just happened. Seeing Fang Jianqiu return, he quickly asked:
"Brother Fang, that Westerner didn't give you any trouble, did he?"
Fang Jianqiu didn't say much, just shook his head to indicate that he was alright.
Before Ye Lang could ask anything else, a familiar, broken gong sound rang out:
"Hey, who's number thirty-five? Get out here right now!"
It was Lin San who was shouting.
All the other laborers looked at Lin San, but Fang Jianqiu looked at Ye Lang beside him.
"Brother Ye, is this guy here to see you?"
Ye Lang nodded blankly. Number 35 was indeed his number, but what was he supposed to do?
"I am Foreman Lin, number thirty-five..."
Lin San looked over upon hearing the sound, stared at Ye Lang for a moment, and then sneered:
"Hehe, no wonder!"
He walked over and pulled Ye Lang away:
"Stop dawdling. Consider yourself lucky, kid. Come on, let's go see the foreign master!"
"And you lot, stop looking! Want a whipping? Get back to work!"
The two then quickly left the sugarcane field, leaving Fang Jianqiu and the others to continue harvesting the sugarcane...
