Chapter 23 New Roommate
Chapter 23 New Roommate
At the entrance of the Investigation Bureau, Jiang Zhengge rolled down the car window and waved to Lin Chen and Huihui, who were waiting at the door.
"Come on, get in the car."
Lin Chen glanced at the section chief's car: a black Porsche Panamera, its frog-eye headlights piercing the rain with white light, elegant yet sharp.
His lips twitched slightly, and he couldn't help but think to himself, "You, a section chief in the investigation bureau, can afford a Porsche? Your salary must be over ten thousand a month."
How come I only make six thousand a month?!
Lin Chen opened the umbrella and escorted Huihui to the back seat, while he himself got into the passenger seat.
He fastened his seatbelt, looked around at the interior which resembled a bare-bones house, and glanced at Jiang Zhengge every now and then.
Jiang Zhengge seemed to immediately sense Lin Chen's thoughts. He chuckled and said:
"Don't even think about it. It's an accident vehicle, found in a subspace ruin. I just spent some money to fix it up."
"I see," Lin Chen breathed a sigh of relief. "I thought you were being a little greedy."
"Tsk, how rude of you. The Investigation Bureau is an agency directly managed by the municipal government. Do you think I'm one of those parasites from the foundation?"
Jiang Zhengge started the engine, and with a roar, the Porsche disappeared into the rain like a black lightning bolt.
"If you go to the Warp Ruins to carry out missions later, you can bring some things with you. Usually, nobody wants them because of the risk of Warp contamination, but we have a very effective disinfection process. Most of them can be used after some treatment."
"so..."
Lin Chen leaned back in his chair. He had learned about the definition of warp ruins online: they were areas eroded by the warp, where the entire area had sunk into the warp and was independent of reality.
Generally speaking, anomalous entities reside in ruins. They spend most of their time in the ruins and only leave them under certain special circumstances to invade reality.
At times like these, it's time for the Bureau of Investigation or the Demigods to take charge.
Lin Chen suddenly felt a sense of unreality: things that he had only seen in online science popularization and that seemed very distant had suddenly entered his life.
He was sitting inside a car that had been involved in an accident and was trapped in the rubble of subspace!
Hmm...Is this car unlucky?
"Can we just take things from the subspace?" Lin Chen suddenly asked curiously.
"As long as you can find a way to get it out, that's fine," Jiang Zhengge muttered. "This car was in a low-risk subspace at a depth of about 1.26 meters. The owner was just incredibly unlucky. When the space caved in, he didn't have time to drive the car away. We drove the space tunnel boring machine in to clean it up, and I happened to have my eye on this car, so I used the tunnel boring machine to tow it back."
"The next mission might get us a sports car," Lin Chen nodded slightly, "like the search and raid has been lifted out of Da Hong."
"The search and arrest have been lifted?" Jiang Zhengge was taken aback.
"It's a type of game where you enter an area to search for supplies, fight other people, and then try to get the items out," Lin Chen explained. "Of course, many times you can't find anything, you can't win the fights, you can't get out, and if you die, your equipment will be lost inside."
"There's such a game..." Jiang Zhengge chuckled, "But now that you mention it, exploring subspace ruins does have that feel to it."
The section chief glanced at Lin Chen beside him and gave a wicked smile:
"What? Can't wait to try it out?"
"Actually, I didn't think that way..." Lin Chen sighed softly, "It's quite dangerous, isn't it?"
"It also depends on the location; the deeper you go, the higher the danger level," Jiang Zhengge explained.
The two didn't talk much for the rest of the journey. Lin Chen would occasionally glance at Huihui in the back seat and find that the girl was just staring blankly at her phone, looking listless.
Actually, Lin Chen was already very tired.
But he knew he couldn't rest yet.
Even if she is temporarily under the protection of the Investigation Bureau, the Foundation will not let her off so easily, nor will it let Huihui go.
Previously, he was merely a high-risk target of public opinion, but now that he has killed a demigod, he has become an extremely high-risk target.
However, after these rounds of maneuvering, Lin Chen came to realize one thing:
To survive in Rain City, becoming stronger is the only way.
Only by being strong enough can I protect myself and Huihui.
If we can obtain that azure substance again, we should be able to continue projecting the Sky Tower and further enhance our muscle strength...
Well, since people in the Bureau of Investigation can use this superpower called "psychic insight," there will definitely be opportunities to learn more about it in the future.
Before that... take a good rest.
"Splash!"
Jiang Zhengge made a nimble turn and drove into the residential area attached to the Investigation Bureau, stopping in front of a building.
"Take Huihui back first. It's room 1302 on the 13th floor. Your fingerprint has already been registered on the door lock," Jiang Zhengge said. "I'm going to the market to buy some groceries."
"Driving a Porsche to the market to buy groceries...?" Lin Chen muttered to himself as he unbuckled his seatbelt.
"My salary isn't much higher than yours, don't really think I'm a rich guy," Jiang Zhengge waved his hand, "Huihui, follow your brother, Uncle will buy some ribs for you to eat later."
"..."
After getting out of the car, Lin Chen watched Jiang Zhengge's car drive away before looking at Huihui beside him.
"Are you cold?" he asked softly.
Huihui looked up at Lin Chen and shook her head.
"Brother, can I still go to school?" she asked softly.
In response to the girl's question, Lin Chen rubbed her head.
"I'll ask Section Chief Jiang tomorrow, okay?" he reassured the girl.
Huihui nodded vigorously. As a junior high school student, her maturity made Lin Chen feel a little sorry for her.
Lin Chen led Huihui into the building and took the elevator all the way to the thirteenth floor.
He arrived at the door of room 1302 and unlocked it with his fingerprint:
"Buzz..."
"Door opened successfully."
With a crisp mechanical sound, Lin Chen opened the door.
As soon as the door opened, a jasmine fragrance wafted out, accompanied by the sound of running water from the tap.
"...?"
Lin Chen stared blankly at the bathroom at the other end of the room: the fluorescent light was on, and a slender shadow was faintly visible on the door.
"Huh? You guys are here?"
The sound of the faucet stopped, and the shadowy figure quickly put on a bathrobe before pushing open the shower door.
"Phew, that was fast. I thought you'd have to take longer."
Li Zhanyi smiled at the dumbfounded Lin Chen, then tied up her wet long hair, revealing her snow-white neck.
"Hi, Huihui, I'm Sister Zhanyi," the girl bent down to look at Huihui, the large movement causing Lin Chen to subconsciously look away. "I originally wanted to come back with you, but I was too dirty, so I came back to take a shower first."
"Miss Li, Miss Li Zhanyi," Lin Chen said somewhat flusteredly, "Um...did I come to the wrong room? I thought I lived with Section Chief Jiang..."
"Oh, right," Li Zhanyi straightened up and patted Lin Chen on the shoulder, "He lives next door in 1301. There are only two of us on this floor, so it's like we're one family."
"No, I mean..."
"uh-huh?"
Li Zhanyi moved closer to Lin Chen, and the pleasant jasmine scent wafted over again: it smelled like shampoo.
"Shouldn't we, people our age, have more to talk about?" she probed Lin Chen. "Or is it..."
"You're shy," Li Zhanyi concluded.
"How is that possible?"
Lin Chen straightened his back: "A scholar can be killed but not humiliated; a man's knees are worth gold; there are gods three feet above his head..." What nonsense!
"Where is our room?" Lin Chen took a deep breath and asked.
"Here are the two rooms, you can choose whichever you prefer," Li Zhanyi pointed to the other side, "I clean them regularly, there's some clutter inside, you can tidy them up and move in."
